Number 10 – Snowy Road (눈길)

Snowy Road

Comfort women drama Snowy Road actually began as a two part series on KBS TV before being edited into a singular film, and upon its premiere at Jeonju Independent Film Festival it wasn’t long until the audience were flowing with tears. While the production values are limited due to the confines of the budget, Snowy Road has more emotional resonance than a great many other films released throughout the year thanks to a powerful storyline that not only portrays the sexual atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers, but also contrasts such abuses with the rampant sexism endured by women in contemporary Korea. In doing so the film reinforces the importance of women’s rights, and is one of the most emotional cinematic experiences of the year.
