Number 1 – Veteran (베테랑)
Action maestro Ryoo Seung-wan returned to cinema screens in top form with the wonderfully entertaining, adrenaline-inducing romp that is Veteran. Combining a cop thriller with high-octane action sequences has been director Ryoo’s forte for quite some time, but in his latest outing he does so with an incredible wit and a strong sense of social injustice in the form of chaebol corruption. Featuring charismatic performances by leads Hwang Jung-min and Yoo Ah-in, with strong support in the form of Oh Dal-su and Yu Hae-jin, Veteran became increasingly popular – so much so that positive word-of-mouth helped it to become the highest grossing Korean film of the year, and deservedly so.
